David Gamel
Stage Design
David Gamel began studying scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in autumn 2017 in the class of Prof. Anna Viebrock.
He gained his first practical experience in stage design in autumn/winter 2019 as part of a group project for the music performance Ausbreitung Variabel by the theatre collective Novoflot at Haus der Statistik in Berlin. In summer 2020, he worked as an assistant stage designer to Birgit Kellner and Christian Schlechter on the theatre production Die Rückkehr der Ishta at Theater Dschungel Vienna.
Between winter 2020 and spring 2022, David Gamel was involved in an international collaborative project with students from the Karlsruhe University of Music on a conceptual staging of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. In spring 2021, he designed the stage set for the production You Better Work, Btch!* at Theater Dschungel Vienna.
In the summer semester of 2022, he completed a guest semester in the Architecture program at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. During the summers of 2023, 2024, and 2025, he worked as a technical assistant on the opera productions Aida, Der Liebestrank (The Elixir of Love) and La Traviata for the Opera BURG GARS.
From autumn 2023 to summer 2024, David Gamel spent an Erasmus exchange year in Porto, Portugal. He subsequently worked in autumn 2024 as an assistant for stage and costume design for the opera production Armida at the Schlosstheater Potsdam, and in winter 2025 as an assistant stage designer for Wozzeck at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau. In summer and autumn 2025, he was engaged as a stage technician at the Vienna Volksoper.
