Clemens Unterreiner’s inspiring life—from losing his sight as a child to becoming a celebrated “Kammersänger”, author, vocal teacher, and opera director—is truly a remarkable Austrian story. He grew up in his hometown of Vienna as well as in Graz and Budapest, where he received private vocal training from renowned teachers.
Since September 2005, Clemens Unterreiner has been engaged as a soloist and permanent ensemble member at the Vienna State Opera, captivating audiences in nearly 900 performances, 26 premieres and over 92 different roles. His extensive repertoire includes roles such as Escamillo, Sharpless, the Ghost Messenger, Faninal, Donner, the Minister, Don Giovanni, Wolfram, Don Fernando-Minister, Belcore, the Music Teacher, Father Peter Besenbinder, Papageno, Telramund, Marcello, Albert, Paolo, Valentin, Dr. Falke and many others. This repertoire ranges from German, Italian, and French to Russian cavalier and heroic baritone roles, features lyric Mozart parts, and also includes a substantial collection of art songs, masses and oratorios. He has collaborated with leading conductors such as Philippe Jordan, Christian Thielemann, Simon Rattle, Franz Welser-Möst, Peter Schneider, Kirill Petrenko, Simone Young, Cornelius Meister, Stefan Soltesz, Seiji Ozawa, Ádám Fischer, Andris Nelsons, Valery Gergiev and many others. Since the 2008 season, he has also appeared as a guest soloist at the Vienna Volksoper, performing baritone roles such as Sharpless, the Speaker, Dr. Falke and Papageno and sings regularly at all major festivals and concert halls in Austria. As an internationally sought-after guest soloist and concert singer, he has performed in London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, Baden-Baden, Dresden, Nice, Muscat, Bratislava, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Munich, Berlin, Prague, Budapest and many other opera and concert venues worldwide. In these performances, he regularly collaborates with leading colleagues, directors and conductors of the classical music world.
His renowned “long voice”, ranging from bass-baritone to tenor-baritone, allows him to perform a wide variety of repertoire across all periods and styles—from early music, Renaissance and Baroque, through Classical and Romantic, to modern music and contemporary world premieres.
Since 2023, he has held the title of Austrian “Kammersänger” and has taken on the role of Artistic Director at the Opera BURG GARS.
