Paolo Rumetz, born in Trieste, began his vocal training in his hometown and continued his studies in Munich with Josef Metternich as well as in Mantua.
After his debut in Ariadne auf Naxos in 1988 at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, he has performed at all major opera houses in Italy, including Teatro La Fenice in Venice, La Scala in Milan, Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Teatro Regio in Turin, the Rome Opera and the Arena di Verona. He has also appeared at numerous international opera houses, including London, Prague, Zurich, Paris, Salzburg, Zagreb, Barcelona, Lisbon, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Berlin and many others.
His repertoire encompasses a wide range of baritone roles in the Italian, French and German repertoire, including Così fan tutte and Le Nozze di Figaro by W. A. Mozart, La Cenerentola, Il Turco in Italia, L’Italiana in Algeri by G. Rossini, L’elisir d’amore and Lucia di Lammermoor by G. Donizetti, Un giorno di regno, La Traviata, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, Simon Boccanegra, Aida, Falstaff by G. Verdi, Lohengrin by R. Wagner, Tosca, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi by G. Puccini, Werther, Don Quichotte by J. Massenet, Fedora by U. Giordano, I Quattro Rusteghi by E. Wolf-Ferrari, Pagliacci by R. Leoncavallo, La belle Hélène, Les Contes d’Hoffmann by J. Offenbach and Oceana by A. Smareglia.
Over the past seasons, he has sung Falstaff in Salzburg, Bologna and Zurich, L’elisir d’amore at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and at the Savonlinna Festival, Il Trovatore in Rijeka, La Forza del Destino in Modena, Tel Aviv and Zurich, Don Quichotte in Trieste and Turin, Il Turco in Italia in Zurich, Leipzig and at the Rome Opera, Il segreto di Susanna in Zurich, L’Italiana in Algeri in Lisbon, Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Zurich and Salzburg, Roberto Devereux in Trieste, I Quattro Rusteghi in Toulouse and Zurich, Madama Butterfly at La Scala in Milan and in Seoul, Aida in Trieste, La Traviata at the Ljubljana Festival, La Bohème and Pagliacci in Verona, L’elisir d’amore and Otello in Trieste, Aida and Simon Boccanegra in Tokyo and La Wally and Gioconda in St. Gallen.
Paolo Rumetz has been a member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble since the 2013/14 season, where he has performed in productions such as L’elisir d’amore, La Cenerentola, Roberto Devereux, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, L’Italiana in Algeri, Das schlaue Füchslein, Andrea Chénier, Tosca and Rigoletto. He has also appeared in Gounod’s Faust at the Salzburg Festival, in the title role of Rigoletto in Klosterneuburg and at the Hanover State Opera.
In October 2016, he performed at the Vienna State Opera as Hidraot in C. W. Gluck’s Armide, the first new production of the 2016/17 season under the baton of Marc Minkowski and in the title role of Falstaff conducted by Zubin Mehta. In the 2017/18 season, he sang Germont in La Traviata at the Vienna State Opera and in Klagenfurt. He also performed Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera in Vienna and Chemnitz. At his resident theatre in Vienna, he additionally performed the roles of Amonasro in Aida, Rigoletto and La Cenerentola. Following his participation in the Summer Festival of Oderzo as Count Luna in Il Trovatore, he recently appeared as Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Vienna State Opera.
In 2024, he performed as Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore – The Elixir of Love at the Opera BURG GARS. In March 2025, he took on the title role in Macbeth in Irun. In December 2025, he sang the title role in Falstaff in Brazil, followed by another performance in the same role in Cosenza in March 2026.
